Social media marketing. How important is it?

What is social media marketing (SMM)? Social media marketing is the process of using social media channels to gain brand and product awareness by engaging its customers.  Social media itself a general term for sites that may provide different social actions. For instance, Twitter is a social site designed to let people share short, bit sized micro-messages with others, while Facebook, acts as a network, a social networking to be precise, that allows sharing updates, photos, joining events and a variety of other activities

Social media marketing programs usually focus on efforts to create content that attracts the attention of the users. They will encourage readers to share the content within their social networks. As promotional adverts spreads from user to user, it begins to resonate through the channels because it’s origin appears to come from a trusted source as opposed to the brand or company itself. These channels become influencers; credible friends and/or sources of reviews and information.

Social media has become a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with internet access.  And unlike traditional forms of marketing,  social media is relatively inexpensive to implement into full marketing campaigns.

Social media often feeds into the discovery of new content such as news stories, and “discovering new content” is a search activity. Social media can also help build links. Successful social media marketing campaign will result in thousands of new inbound links to your site. Inbound links are important things that influence the rankings of your site.

Social media can be a great way to improve your rankings. The vital thing about this is that the majority of the links that come from a social media marketing campaign are natural links. They are not reciprocated, bought, or put a request for approving links.

Using social media websites for reputation management

Lots of social media sites, especially the more popular ones, rank very well within the search engines. This can make positive impact when it comes to manage your reputation. On one hand, it is very easy to control the first page of results by leveraging these sites. You can make people discuss about your company or site positively on Digg, MySpace, Yelp or YouTube, and you might end up with listings that show up on the first page of search engine results for your company name, along with your own site.
